Mandate Palestine
Between 1922–1948, Great Britain governed the region of Palestine in the Middle East under an international mandate, in cooperation with both Jewish and Arab councils. When thousands of Jews fled to Palestine to escape the Holocaust, Britain began to restrict Jewish immigration after 1939 due to pressure from Arab leaders. Following the United Nations resolution of November 29, 1947 to partition Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state, the international mandate came to an end and the State of Israel was established on May 14, 1948.
