nationalism
A political ideology that emphasizes the interests, culture, and identity of a particular nation or group. It is often tied to the belief that nations are defined by a shared language, culture, and history and have the right to sovereignty and self-governance.
Nationalism emerged in the 19th century and was instrumental in shaping modern nation states across Europe. Nationalists often hold their nation--as well as its history, customs, and traditions--in higher regard than other nations. Nationalism found its most extreme expression in fascist regimes: under National Socialism, the German nation was defined by race.
