Site of a decisive battle between the Soviet Red Army and Nazi Germany. The siege for the industrial city of Stalingrad [today: Volgograd] lasted 199 days between September 1942 and February 1943, with fierce combat and heavy losses on both sides. German troops were eventually surrounded and trapped by the Soviets, leading to the surrender of over 90,000 German soldiers. The German defeat at Stalingrad was a turning point in the war.
