Walbrzych [Waldenburg], Poland

In mid-1945, Paula Burger and her family had been liberated and living in Lida for nearly a year. They decided to make their way west toward the American zone of occupation in Germany, in hopes of leaving Europe. On their journey westward, they passed through Waldenburg, staying long enough for Paula to attend school briefly.

On February 22 ,1949 Fred Marcus arrived in San Francisco on board the S.S. Joplin Victory from Shanghai. He lived in San Francisco, pursuing a successful career in Jewish education. After his retirement in 1981, he moved to Denver, CO.

Novogrudek, Poland [Navahrudak, Belarus]

Located in what is today Belarus, Navahrudak [Novogrudek, Poland] has been claimed by Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Belarus since the 13th century. After World War I, it was ceded to Poland. Paula Burger [Koladicki] was born in Novogrudek on July 25, 1934. The city was occupied by the Soviet Union from September 1939 until the Nazi invasion in June 1941. Under Nazi occupation, Paula and her family spent some time in hiding before they were forced to move into the Novogrudek ghetto, where Paula's mother was murdered. She escaped with her father and brother in mid-1942 and joined a partisan group in the nearby forest.
