Whipsnade, U.K.

Shortly after the outbreak of war in September 1939, the British government evacuated all children from London in order to protect them from Nazi bombing attacks. Henry's boarding school relocated to the town of Whipsnade, where Henry lived until his immigration to the U.S. in 1947.
Westgate, U.K.

In 1939, Henry Lowenstein spent six weeks in a children's refugee camp in Westgate after his arrival in the U.K. on a Kindertransport. Conditions in the camp were deplorable and the children were largely left to fend for themselves.

Rotterdam, Netherlands

On June 5, 1939, Henry Lowenstein left Berlin on a Kindertransport train bound for Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There, he boarded a ship with hundreds of other unaccompanied children for the crossing to England, where they land at the harbor at Harwich.
