After his discharge from the Air Force in 1953, Henry Lowenstein enrolls in the theater program at Yale. He studies and works in theater in New Haven, CT until he is offered a job at the Bonfils Theatre in Denver in 1956.

On June 5, 1939, Henry Lowenstein left Berlin on a train bound for Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There, he boarded a ship with hundreds of other unaccompanied children for the crossing to England. From the harbor at Harwich, they continue on to London, from where they are sent to refugee camps for children. Later, Henry attends a boarding school in London for a short time before his school is evacuated to the countryside in anticipation of German bombing raids on London.

Henry Lowenstein joins the U.S. Air Force in 1950, at the outbreak of the Korean War. While stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, he takes classes and works as an illustrator. He meets his future wife Doris, and they marry in 1952.
