Wolf Koladicki is eventually able to secure U.S. immigration visas for himself, Paula, Isaac, Chana and their new daughter, Fay, with assistance from HIAS and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. In July of 1949, the family boards a plane in Munich bound for New York and a new life in the United States. After a few days in New York, they continue on to Chicago, where Wolf has relatives. They find an apartment and start to rebuild their lives.

Excerpt from Paula’s Window

We boarded the New York-bound plane to America on a foggy Munich morning in 1949. I was 14. As I mounted the narrow staircase to the unknown, I did not look behind me. A starch-suited stewardess greeted me at the entrance to the airplane. Papa seemed relieved. Chana became ill before we even left the runway. I sat next to Isaac, eight years old and ecstatic, and held little Fay on my lap. The stewardess performed a head count – two, four, fifteen, twenty, thirty. “Put on your seat belts,” she instructed.

Planes weren’t pressurized then, and many people got sick as the cabin lurched and lifted. A powerful force nailed me to my seat. The plane rose higher, cut through the clouds and gradually leveled off in unbroken blue skies. Papa leaned across the narrow aisle and asked if I was all right. No words were necessary. The excitement in my gut could have powered our entire journey.

There are no signs or markers in the ocean, only endless, rolling waves. I let my mind race ahead to the new world awaiting us. […]

After a two-hour layover, we embarked on the last leg of our journey. The ghetto and the Naliboki receded in time and distance.

“Look!” the passengers exclaimed, “New York City!” I was incredulous. “There’s the Statue of Liberty, Papa! And the Empire State Building, right over there!” The plane circled and descended. Its wheels skidded on the landing strip and roared to a stop. A nightmare that had seemed like an eternity evaporated in the blink of an eye.
